I have worked many jobs over the years, but I returned to photography with the multi-year project Earth+Sea. It began as an attempt to capture the natural beauty and collision of forces in Southeast Alaska during Covid, when I found myself returning to one of the first jobs I ever held; a salmon tenderman on an old wooden boat.
My work evolved to medium format land-and-sea-scapes. Then, I can’t remember why, during my second year I decided to look beneath the surface. It began on a whim, with just a cheap mask and snorkel. I was shivering violently, but in awe of the beauty and the richness of the ocean I had mistakenly thought I was familiar with. The experience was life-changing, and continues to evolve as I improve my breath capacity and skill at underwater photography.
My freediving work in Alaska and the Pacific Northwest began to put my landscapes in a new perspective. I realized they are parts of a whole. Similar to how diving into the deeper parts of one’s psyche is essential for self growth, I think it is important for those of us who value the natural world or simply live at its mercy to consider more intensely the incredible richness of life below the surface that feeds us, gives us air, and represents the origin of all life on earth. I believe that on a deep cellular level it is still our home. Thus, Earth+Sea. One planet. And for me, so far, one small corner of it.
